PRE-TAN
12 hours before you tan, exfoliate to remove dead skin cells.
Pre-tan, apply coconut oil to your eyebrows to keep you from ending up with splotchy brows full of tan build up.
Pre-tan, rub an ice cube over your face to seal your pores. This way, your pores won’t get blocked by the self-tanner and you run less risk of breakouts.
Same applies to your legs. Rub an icepack over your legs to close the pores on your legs. This will prevent tan from sitting in your pores and will prevent those annoying brown spots that appear on your calves and shins.
Just prior to tanning, apply an oil free, fragrance free lotion to the super dry areas: knees, elbows and ankles. These areas are more likely to “grab” the tan, so the lotion helps prevents tan saturating these areas, which will otherwise go darker than other parts of the body.
MID-TAN
Start from the bottom! You’ll need to either sit or bend over to tan your feet and lower legs. If you start from the top of your body, then bend over to do you lower body, your freshly applied tan will rub and smudge against your other body parts. So, start your tan application from your feet and work upwards to avoid any smudges or creases in your tan.
Contour with your tan for ultra-long, slim legs; Apply an extra layer of tan down the inner thigh to make legs appear longer and slimmer. To apply tan to your back, wrap your tanning mitt around a wooden spoon, then secure mitt in place with an elastic band. You can then easily reach all areas of your back.
POST-TAN
Uneven tan around your forehead and hairline? Dip a cotton pad into your facial toner and dab it across your hairline to even it out.
After you’ve taken off you’re tanning mitt, you’ll need to apply a small amount of tan to your hands so they’re not a different colour to your arms. Apply a tiny bit of tan to the back of both hands, and rub the backs of your hands together. Then rub a light moisturiser or hand cream over your hands (and in between fingers and across wrists up to where you’ve tanned your arms) as if you were washing your hands. The lotion will carry and spread the tan across your hands and wrist and ensure a smooth, even coverage of tan, without any dark marks in between your fingers or on your wrists. This will prevent orange hands or even worse, white ghost hands on a lovely bonze arm.
Apply a body gloss to make your tan pop. It adds shine and a beautiful glow and takes the whole look to the next level.
In the days after your tan, avoid soap which can by drying, and go for a moisturising creamy body wash to keep moisture levels in your skin up, and prevent skin from drying out.
